Get Smart about Cannabis™

Michigan Caregivers Cup

I was on holiday with my family for Christmas and New Years 2009/2010 when my father picked up a copy of the Cannabis Bible and High Times. In the High Times issue was an advertisement and information for the 1st Michigan Caregivers Cup. Naturally, I sent them an email; the same as I had sent an email to show support for Proposal 1.

I was shocked when I received a reply asking me if I’d be interested in speaking to a group at the 1st Michigan Caregivers Cup. Taking into consideration the fact my family was highly concerned with my public statements during the 2008 campaign I decided to take a breathe and ask my mom for advice before jumping at the opportunity.

I’ll never forget the moment; I was with my mom, sitting on the floor packing, and I told her about the opportunity. to share my store by delivering a public speak during an hour long class. To my surprise my mom told me “you need to share your story”; hearing her change a lifetime belief that cannabis was a scourge motivated and compelled me to open up and share my truth..

Grateful for the opportunity and with the support of my mother I replied to the request and graciously accepted the offer. It was the very first time my experience, education, and talent were put to good use. It was a great honor to even be considered as I’m sure there were plenty of others qualified to offer patient testimony.

Standing in front of a room full of strangers I was excited to present my story. On the desk was an artistic display of huge cannabis roots put together by one of the organizers, a kindergarten teacher, and serious activist, Chuck Ream. It was a bit imposing for a first timer like myself and I was extremely impressed with the display.

I gave my speak and then opened the floor for questions. I still remember the faces of people who had traveled to the convention from across the country. With raised hands, the asked their questions one at at time, and I did my best to answer them.

Having my parents and my husband with me was a great support. All of us were excited to see what the convention had to offer. I was introduced to Jamie Lowell, another major activist, and one of the founders of Michigan’s 1st medical marijuana dispensary in Ysplianti, MI called Third Coast. It was a pleasure and an honor to be one of the first patients to register with Third Coast.

Seeing Third Coast, Michigan’s 1st dispensary, standing successful today brings me great joy. Knowing patients can visit a dispensary and choose safe tested medicine makes me feel a sense of accomplishment and pride.

Knowing future generations of patients won’t know the stigma of cannabis is what motivates me to continue sharing my story.
